Alessandro Gualtieri was by no means a novice when he decided to step into the world of perfumery.
While working at Haarmann & Reimer in the 1980s, he went on a trip to Sharjah in the UAE, which is where his life took a turn. In his own words:
"That’s where I got hooked. Completely fascinated. That for me was the real deal of perfumery. You could touch it, you could feel it."
Once he realized that he wanted to delve into oriental perfumery, he went to Oman, India and Saudi Arabia to gain knowledge about these countries’ traditional perfume-making techniques. He did not want to participate in the ongoing trends and formulae of the West. Instead, he wanted to create something new and special. Finally, in 2008, he decided launch perfumes under his new Nasomatto banner independently.
Nasomatto’s most popular fragrances include Black Afgano, Duro and Baraonda.
Alessandro Gualtieri sums up his vision and work process succinctly:
“I begin to make something, but, at a certain point, it starts making choices by itself. It is the process that interests and guides me...My involvement is to create something that is alive and will be able to say new things. I want my perfumes to have an intelligence of their own, not just be slaves to my meaning."
Nasomatto fragrances adhere to no rules. Instead, they explore various combinations of ingredients and how they interact amongst each other. The ornate perfume bottles, each with their customized caps, are made in Italy.
Each fragrance comes with its own story, but the wearer is free to interpret its meaning. Nasomatto does not publish ingredient lists. Instead, Gualtieri describes the perfumes by evoking the inspiration and sentiment behind them.
Nasomatto, coined by combining Naso and Matto, meaning the "crazy nose," was established in 2008 by Alessandro Gualtieri. He is singlehandedly responsible for the brand's memorable creations over the years. While Nasomatto has not been around for a long time, it has already managed to capture the imagination of perfume enthusiasts who want to stand apart from the crowd.
Alessandro, a rebellious bohemian by nature, has a distinctive personality, which has allowed him to carve a niche for himself in the industry. His perfumes are loud, impactful, and memorable, even as the perfumer prefers to stay away from the spotlight. Gualtieri's decades of experience in the industry helped him when it came to establishing his own brand.
